Easy Sourdough Crackers

Homemade Sourdough Crackers are surprisingly one of the easiest recipes you can make. Homemade crackers are great because you can really go all out and customize them to your taste buds.

Some amazing benefits to using sourdough as apposed to regular flour, is that sourdough is actually fermented. It contains all the good bacteria that helps to break down the gluten and other proteins inside the flour and said to be easier to digest! Pretty cool, don't you think?

The bonus? they are free from all of the preservatives and long names of ingredients that we have no idea what they are, where they come from or even how they are pronounced!

Okay. Enough of the small talk, amirght? Lets get to the recipe!

I must warn you though....
THEY ARE AMAZING AND YOU MIGHT JUST EAT THEM ALL AT ONCE. They are THAT good 😏

First you will need to measure out 1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour and 1/2 Cup All purpose white flour.

Next, you will need to measure out 1 Cup of your sourdough starter.
**Note: feed your sourdough starter a few hours before you plan to bake with it or the night before if you plan to bake in the morning. This will allow your starter to feed and grow in size so that when you take your portion of starter out, you will still have some left behind to continue to feed and use for all your other sourdough baking desires. **

Then, measure out 1/4 Cup Olive oil or Avocado Oil plus a little extra for brushing the tops of your crackers.

Optional: use your favorite herbs, fresh or dried, and parmesan cheese if you like a little cheese flavor. I personally do not measure these ingredients out. I simply season to our tasting here. We do like herby so if I had to guess, I'd say I put a couple tablespoons of dried Italian herb seasoning into ours if that helps give you an idea of how herby you might want yours, if you want any at all.

Now that you have all your ingredients measured out, simply toss them all in to a mixer if you've got one. If not, don't worry you can still make these easily by hand mixing. Don't be afraid to dig your hands and start mixing and kneading the dough until its smooth.

With your paddle attachment, turn your mixer on to a low or medium low speed and mix it all together until a soft dough forms.

If you used a mixer, once you have your soft ball of dough, you want to knead it for a little bit by hand. You can either do this right in the same bowl (which is what I like do, less clean up 😉) or lightly flour your counter top and knead there. You want to knead for a few minutes and then let it rest for a few minutes. Repeat this about 3 or 4 times.

You then want to divide your cracker dough in half as equally as you can and wrap with plastic wrap and place in the fridge anywhere between 30 min to an hour. Your just wanting your dough to cool off and firm up a little.

After your dough has chilled and firmed up some, now is the time to preheat your oven to 350⁰ degrees.

Lay down a piece of parchment paper and flour the top. Flour your rolling pin so your dough does not stick to your pin. You may have to dust your pin a couple times during the rolling process. Dust as needed.

Take out one of your 2 packages of wrapped sourdough cracker dough and roll out on your flour covered parchment until your dough is very thin. About 1/16th of an inch to 1/8th inch thin.

If you want to make your crackers look a little fancy, you can roll over the top of your flattened dough a stamped rolling pin. I picked mine here at Big R Stores or you can browse their entire selection of stamped rolling pins here

Cut your dough into small squares like the photo above and sprinkle with either garlic salt, crushed pink himalyan salt or sea salt to taste.

Bake your crackers at 350for about 20-25 minutes or until the edges of your crackers start to brown slightly. Repeat the process for the second wrapped package of sourdough cracker dough.
Let cool and enjoy.

A few ways we like to eat our sourdough crackers is with soup, salad, topped with our jalapeno goat cheese and jam or just simply by the handfuls.
